Blinding light hit my eyes and I turned over quickly, wanting nothing more to sleep a little bit longer. I felt Bree’s warm body snuggled next to mine, and I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her closer to me. She moaned, but I could tell by her breathing that she was still fast asleep.

My eyes slowly opened, and looked down at her next to me. God, she was beautiful. My bear stirred slightly and one word crossed my mind. Mine. Apparently my bear had admitted fully what he wanted, but I wasn’t too sure about my human side yet. As much as I couldn’t deny my attraction to her, there was still the problem that she was the sister of a victim in our investigation.

I turned my body onto my back, but I still held Bree closely in my arms. She turned her head slightly and snuggled deeper into my side. A slow smile crept across my face. I couldn’t deny that I enjoyed her next to me. Deep down I knew it was because Bree actually meant something to me.

Over the last several months, with Shane engaged to Lydia and then Logan meeting Maggie, I felt like an odd man out amongst them. Now with Bree by my side, I felt that I was finally finding my way. However, I couldn’t help the nagging feeling that it was breaking protocol. Granted, I had never been one to follow the rules completely, but I did always try to abide by the big ones.

I looked back down at Bree and took a deep sigh. Maybe Bree was worth breaking the rules for.

I closed my eyes and slowly started to drift off to sleep. I was suddenly jolted awake by the sound of my cell phone. My eyes sprang open and I looked over at Bree. She was still fast asleep. I quickly turned over and grabbed my phone. I looked at the screen and saw that it was Shane.

Shit. If Shane was calling this early, it couldn’t be good news. I looked back over to Bree to make sure she was still fast asleep. I got out of bed, and quietly left her bedroom.

“Hey, man. What’s going on?”

“Hey, Marco. Sorry to call you this early.”

“It’s fine. Is something up? I know if you’re calling me this early it’s not good.”

Shane let out a sigh. “We just need you to come into the station. The captain told Logan about Dr. Evans, and he isn’t taking the news lightly.”

Fuck. I forgot about telling Logan what we had figured out. I was so focused on Bree that I completely forgot that Logan was the one that wanted me to get ahold of Dr. Evans in the first place.

“I’ll be in as soon as I can.”
